THE PROBLEM · PART 2 LEVESQUE (2013) ·

Five Barriers to Seeking Help (Levesque, 2013) 求助行為的五大障礙 (Levesque, 2013)

01

Awareness

Unsure when to seek help and unfamiliar with resources

02

Acceptability

Stigma and negative labels around counseling

03

Availability

Counseling centers closed or long waiting lists

04

Affordability

Expensive off-campus counseling fees are hard to afford

05

Appropriateness

Clinical institutions feel too formal and distant

The problem is not a lack of demand, but the limitations and barriers of help-seeking channels.

PEER SUPPORT

What is Peer Support?

Mental health support shouldn't have only one path. Besides counseling and therapy, daily human connection and mutual help are equally effective interventions.

PROFESSIONAL COUNSELING

Professional Counseling

Professional client-therapist relationship
Clinical settings / counseling rooms
Appointment-based, long waiting lists
Diagnosis & treatment oriented
Higher out-of-pocket cost

Peer support does not replace professional counseling

but makes mental support
more diverse & everyday

PEER SUPPORT

Peer Support

Equal peer companionship
Daily life environments
Low barrier, can happen anytime
Listening & empathy oriented
Free of charge

Peer support also increases the willingness to seek professional counseling—those who have been listened to are more willing to seek help when needed.
